During a new interview with the godfather of the horror game Silent Hill, he said that it is difficult to remake the game, as it is the case with the remake of the Resident Evil series.
In a new interview published today on VGC, Kiichiro Toyama was asked if he'd be interested in seeing Konami possibly remake Silent Hill, given Capcom's success in re-releasing the Resident Evil series. Toyama replied:
I think it would be more difficult to remake it (Silent Hill remake) than Resident Evil, because the gameplay as a concept is a little outdated.
Toyama added that Silent Hill is not an action game, as is the case with Resident Evil, so the graphics and sounds may be improved, but the result may not satisfy the fans of the series.
Toyama continues to talk about the remake and the way to present old titles to the public and modern platforms, as it makes them lose their originality, which is the reason for their success, adding that from the visual point of view, there is no objection to improving the graphics of these games to suit the new platforms and technology, but as for the concept of the style of play, the matter needs to be rethought.
Unlike movies, games are hard to enjoy, as in the original case. It's obviously because of the platform, but over time, through the game's mechanics, especially in usability, it lacks the original philosophy.
Many may agree with Toyama in his statements, as many classic horror games were successful due to the way and philosophy in which they were presented. For example, the Resident Evil games were heavily reliant on the fixed camera system to hide areas of the game where it makes the player hesitant and suspicious of what awaits him. In those areas, this plays a major role in putting the player in a state of anticipation and fear of the unknown.
But on the other hand, we are excited to see a new comeback of the Silent Hill series so that it is designed to suit the new generation of gaming platforms as well as the direction of video games.
So far, there are only leaks and rumors about a new part or more of the Silent Hill series under development, and we are waiting for Konami to confirm these leaks with an official announcement.
Until then, what do you think of Kiichiro Toyama's view of remakes of classic games? We note that Toyama is currently leading the independent studio Bokeh Game and working on the project for the new horror game Slitterhead.
